Wisdom from Knitting: Here are 3 Real-Life Lessons
You can actually gain valuable wisdom from knitting. After all, you’ll be spending a significant amount of time in the hobby. It’s likely you’ll pick up lessons along the way (or having a few “shower thoughts” after knitting).
Here are some of the real-life lessons you’ll learn (or have already learned) during knitting or when just thinking about it:
1. Going back to tangibles
Grandma is right: We should try knitting. That’s because almost our entire lives are now being spent on digital. We stare at computer and phone screens all day long. Our creations are now almost online. We can’t touch those creations and they lack dimensions. Being online all day long also keeps us distracted and diminishes our focus.
But knitting is different. It’s a real-world hobby where we can produce something really tangible and useful. It’s also good for the mental health because knitting helps us focus and feel productive. We’re going back to the reality where we can actually make things that we can touch.
2. You can always fix mistakes
Mistakes are common in knitting even for experienced hobbyists. Just one wrong stitch can leave almost anyone confused. Moreover, it could be discouraging to finish making that big sweater if mistakes are all over the place.
The good news is you can always correct mistakes. It takes more effort though but it will still be worth it if you persevere. In the end, you’ll be grateful you continued knitting.
Also remember that even experts make mistakes. It’s normal and from time to time you’ll make stupid mistakes while stitching or even when choosing a yarn. These mistakes allow us to grow and perhaps teach others how to avoid those mistakes.
3. Happiness is greater if shared
Many hobbyists form knitting groups to make the activity more engaging. Each session is an opportunity to exchange tricks and ideas. It also makes knitting a far more pleasurable experience.
Even if you’re an introvert, you don’t need to isolate yourself from the rest of the world. Try attending group knitting sessions even for just once a month. If you find it good, you can attend weekly or more often depending on your schedule.
